W-Model: When Testing Becomes a Discipline of Its Own

Extension of the V-Model: integrating validation and verification from the design phase to eliminate defects upstream

What is the W-Model?

The W-model, or W-Model, is an evolution of the V-model that recognizes an often-ignored fact: testing is not a phase that comes after development, it is a parallel discipline that starts day one.

Where the V-Model places testing in parallel with development phases (acceptance tests correspond to requirements, integration tests correspond to architecture, etc.), the W-Model creates two parallel active branches simultaneously: a development branch and an independent test branch.

Two distinct teams: the model assumes developers and testers are separate entities. In small teams, this separation is artificial.

Rigidity toward changes: like the V-Model, the W-Model supports requirement changes poorly in-flight.

Documentation-intensive: parallel test planning generates much documentation that can become obsolete if needs evolve.

  • Projects with strict regulatory requirements needing complete traceability
